My mother, Danger and Rescue: Day 4

I volunteer at Conner Prairie about 3 times a month. Today was one of those days, so I wasn't home until about 7 p.m. When I got home my mom had a story to tell: While I was gone, my mom was outside working in her flower bed. Our cat, Max was also outside, laying in the dirt under the lilac bush which the nest is in. No, he doesn't hurt them. Actually he saves one. My mom looks over and sees him gingerly touching something. A baby chick, who has fallen out out the nest. Hurriedly she runs over, fearing the worse. But she sees him move. None of my siblings wanted to climb into the bush to put him back in the nest, so my mom does. Upon hearing this story I hurry over to check on them. All three chicks are alive and well. Waiting for food. Thanks Mom!

Marvelous Mothers: Day 3

Today my sister and I were walking around our block when we saw the mom robin, identified by the white chest, catch a worm. She then proceeded to cut the worm into three so she'd have enough to feed all three of here chicks. Smart thinking! Stuffing all three in to here beak, she flew off. In one of Gene Stratton- Porter's books, Homing with the Birds, a mother Robin sat 90 hours in the pouring rain, keeping her eggs warm, without her mate bringing her anything to eat. These amazing moms.

Day two!

Day Two! They already are starting to look big. Is it just me or does the baby on the far right look a lot bigger than the other two? I don't know. My goal is to get a picture of the father for you since I haven't done that yet. I'm also gonna see if I can get a video up here for ya. We have to name these babies. Comment and let me know if you have a suggestion. If there is any specific pose that you would like me to photograph, just let me me me to photograph, just let me know. (: >)=

Triple Surprise!

Well, turns out the egg with the hole in it was a dud. :( So we'll have one less chick to watch grow up. Got up this mourning and we had One Baby! Yeah! Later today my friend and I peeked in on the nest Baby 2 had hatched! Unexpected! Normally chicks hatch in mid-morning from about 8a.m.-12 a.m.. At about 8 tonight checked on the nest and baby 3 had hatched!! So excited. Again this isn't the norm. The babies usually hatch one day after the other, in the order they were laid. Can't wait to see this brood grow up! For more pics, check out my website : http://www.wix.com/birdwomaninthehouse/birdwoman5 (:>)=

Day 13: Quote

This  quote is from a book called What I have done with the birds, by Gene Stratton Porter, the greatest birdwoman there ever was.  Someday I want to write a book on the same subject. Anyways, I think every birder should live by this:
This is the Basis of all my field work,- a mute contract between woman and bird. In spirit I say to the birds, "Trust me and I will do by you as I would be done by. Your nest and young shall be touched as I would wish some giant surpassing my size and strength , as I surpass yours, to touch my cradle and baby. I shall not tear down you home and break your eggs or take your little ones from the nest before they are ready to go, and leave them to die miserably. I shall come in colors that you are accustomed to, and move slowly and softly about, not approaching you too near until your confidence in me is established. I shall be most careful to feed your young what you feed them; drive snakes and and squirrels, and  protect you in every way possible to me. Trust me and go on with your daily life. For what small disturbance is unavoidable among you, forgive me and through it I shall try to win thousands to love and shield you."
Tomorrow might very well be the day that the first robin hatches.  And I'll be Watching. (: >)=
